A long family home is proposed on an exposed ridge line above oyster cove.
The house is tucked down below an existing driveway to reduce its visual impact and create a sunken arrival court from the south. All habitable rooms are strung along the contour to take in the northern sun and stunning views to north, east, and west. The long thin building is protected by earth walls to the south and west, and is widened at the eastern end to create a large terrace in the wind shadow of the building. Triple glazing, high levels of insulation, high internal mass, and a heat recovery system help the building reach an 8.5 star energy rating.
Large bedrooms allow these spaces to be used for study, play, and work from home, and the childrens wing is separated from the parents to allow it to function for guests or grandparents at a later stage.
Large roof overhangs manage the summer sun, while cathedral ceilings and high level windows frame high views to the sky in all rooms.
The off grid home is self sufficient in power, water, and sewer services, and large laundry and pantry spaces are sized for produce from the owners food garden.
